Araqchi Urges Realism in Nuclear Talks, Criticizes West
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and his Irish counterpart Simon Harris met in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, where the Iranian top diplomat criticized the US and Europe for failing to honor their nuclear commitments.
The two ministers discussed bilateral relations between Iran and Ireland.
They also exchanged views on regional and international issues.
Harris welcomed the reopening of Ireland’s embassy in Tehran and expressed hope that it would strengthen ties.
Araqchi outlined Iran’s stance on the nuclear file, citing repeated breaches and failures by the United States and European parties to honor their commitments over the past decade.
He condemned the “unlawful US attack” on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities during negotiations, describing it as an unprecedented blow to diplomacy.
The minister also highlighted Iran’s initiatives to avoid escalation, including its recent understanding with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to implement safeguards obligations.
Araqchi criticized three European countries for shifting positions and raising “excessive and extralegal” demands.
He said such conduct undermines their professed commitment to diplomacy and warned that using Security Council mechanisms to pressure Iran obstructs dialogue but will not affect Tehran’s resolve to defend its rights and interests.
The Iranian minister stressed that resolving the issue requires realism, independent action, and responsibility from all parties, particularly the Europeans.
