Millions of Muslims Observe Tasu’a Mourning Ceremonies
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Millions of black-clad Shiite Muslims gathered across Iran and other countries on Saturday to mark Tasu’a, the day before the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), with solemn processions and rituals honoring his sacrifice.
Millions of Muslims in Iran and around the world commemorated Tasu’a on Saturday.
The occasion marks the ninth day of Muharram the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Shiite communities held mourning processions, recited elegies, and beat their chests in tribute to Imam Hussein, the third Shiite Imam and grandson of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).
In Tehran and cities, towns, and villages across Iran, crowds gathered in mosques and public squares to take part in the rituals.
Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions were killed in 680 AD during the Battle of Karbala in present-day Iraq.
They died fighting against the Umayyad caliph Yazid I’s forces after refusing to pledge allegiance.
Tasu’a particularly honors Abbas ibn Ali (AS), Imam Hussein’s half-brother, who was martyred while attempting to bring water to women and children trapped under siege.
Abbas (AS) is revered as a symbol of loyalty and courage, and the day is also known as the Day of Loyalty and Resistance.
The highly-acclaimed flag bearer is buried in the holy Iraqi city of Karbala in his own shrine, which is within walking distance from that of Imam Hussein (AS), who epitomizes altruism and is known as Sayyed al-Shuhada (Master of the Martyrs) in Shiite Islam and across the Muslim community.
