Iran, EU3 to Hold Nuclear Talks in Switzerland
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – A new round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the European troika will be held in Geneva on Tuesday, August 26, a source said.
The informed source told Tasnim that the upcoming round of talks between Iran and the UK, France and Germany will focus on nuclear issues and the removal of anti-Iran sanctions.
The Iranian delegation will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke by phone with his counterparts from the UK, France, Germany, and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He warned the European parties that any attempt to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal would be legally baseless, morally unjustified, and carry serious consequences.
Araqchi further cautioned that the three European states lack the authority to invoke the mechanism. Addressing European suggestions to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to allow more time for diplomacy, he stressed that such a decision falls solely under the jurisdiction of the Security Council. While reaffirming Iran’s principled stance, he said Tehran would not involve itself in that process.
For their part, the EU3 and the EU foreign policy chief reiterated their commitment to pursuing a diplomatic solution.
