Two Iranian Provinces Hit by New Wave of Coronavirus: President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The fourth wave of coronavirus infection has started in two provinces of Iran, President Hassan Rouhani said, stressing the need for strict compliance with the health protocols.

In comments at a Saturday meeting of the Coronavirus Fight National Headquarters, Rouhani said the fourth wave of COVID-19 infection has started in two provinces of the country.

He also warned that a failure to abide by the protocols would cause the new wave to spread into other provinces.

The president also noted that one of the administration’s main priorities in the four remaining months of his tenure is to fight against and contain the pandemic.

Highlighting the efforts to develop homegrown vaccines for the coronavirus, Rouhani said Tehran has also devised plans to purchase vaccines from abroad.

In a meeting of Health Ministry officials on Wednesday, the president said the cruel sanctions have prevented the foreign parties from honoring their commitments to provide the coronavirus vaccines to Iran.

Arrangements and contracts have been made with COVAX (COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access) and a number of vaccine producing countries, the president noted, adding, “But unfortunately, the obstacles resulting from the cruel sanctions have prevented them from honoring their commitments.”

The daily death toll from the coronavirus pandemic in Iran soared to above 100 on Friday, returning to a three-digit number for the first time in the new Iranian calendar year that began on March 21.

The death toll from the pandemic in Iran has exceeded 62,800, while more than 1,634,000 patients have recovered from the infection so far or have been discharged from hospitals across the country.
