Pilgrims Gather to Mourn Martyrdom Anniversary of Imam Reza
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Tens of thousands of pilgrims from across Iran and abroad have flocked to the holy city of Mashhad in northeastern Iran to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth Shiite Imam.
Pilgrims visited Imam Reza’s shrine in Mashhad, as well as local mosques and religious centers, to participate in mourning ceremonies on Sunday. Similar rituals are being held in other cities across Iran, including the capital, Tehran.
Imam Reza (AS) was martyred in 818 AD after being poisoned by the Abbasid Caliph Ma’mun.
Each year, the Imam Reza shrine attracts nearly 30 million visitors from across Iran as well as other countries such as Iraq, Bahrain, Lebanon, Turkey, the Republic of Azerbaijan, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
