Yemen Situation Worse than Catastrophe: Iran’s President
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani voiced deep concern over deterioration of humanitarian conditions in Yemen under attacks by a Saudi-led military campaign, calling for serious international action to stop war in the Arab country.
The humanitarian situation in Yemen has become worse than an ordinary catastrophe, and Iran deeply deplores the international community’s inaction on the issue, President Rouhani said in a telephone conversation with Oman's Sultan Qaboos on Tuesday.
The Iranian president also hoped for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen on the occasion of Eid al-Adha (a major Islamic solemn festivity) and delivery of humanitarian aids to Yemeni people through efforts of Oman and other pacific countries.
He further emphasized the necessity for closer ties between Tehran and Muscat to contribute to the settlement of regional crises and restoration of peace.
Moreover, President Rouhani expressed Iran’s willingness to enhance economic and trade ties with Oman in the post-sanction era, following conclusion of the nuclear talks between Tehran and six world powers.
For his part, the Omani king hoped for the promotion of cooperation with the Islamic Republic after termination of anti-Iran sanctions.
On Yemen, Sultan Qaboos described diplomacy and dialogue among the Yemeni groups as the best approach to resolve the conflicts in the Arab country.
He, however, gave an assurance that Oman will keep providing Yemenis with humanitarian assistance.
Since March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies have been launching air strikes against Yemen’s Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.
