Iran Ready to Assist Afghan People Hit by Earthquake: Foreign Minister
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi extended condolences to the families of those killed in a recent severe earthquake in eastern Afghanistan and emphasized Iran’s readiness to provide essential assistance to support the affected communities.
Araqchi conveyed these sentiments in a telephone conversation with Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi.
The top Iranian diplomat prayed for the health and recovery of the injured and highlighted that about 200 tons of aid have already been dispatched by Iran.
He also reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to assisting in relief and rescue operations, underlining that Iran stands ready to provide additional emergency supplies, medical aid, and humanitarian supports.
For his part, Muttaqi briefed Araqchi on the scale of damage caused by the quake and expressed gratitude for Iran’s messages of sympathy and for the assistance delivered by the Iranian Red Crescent Society to the earthquake victims.
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck southeastern Afghanistan on Thursday, the third tremor in the same region since Sunday, when one of the country’s deadliest quakes in years killed more than 2,200 people.
Survivors have been left without shelter as aid groups warn of dwindling resources, with the United Nations and other agencies citing a critical need for food, medical supplies and shelter.
