Iran, Russia Stress Scheduled Expiration of UNSCR 2231

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia emphasized that the UN Security Council Resolution 2231 must expire as scheduled, criticized European attempts to extend it, and highlighted the shared positions of Tehran and Moscow on nuclear diplomacy.

In a telephone conversation on Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed the developments related to Iran’s nuclear issue, particularly the measures by the three European countries ahead of the legal expiration of UN Security Council Resolution 2231.

They also talked about the cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

During the call, Araqchi and Lavrov emphasized that the European troika, due to their failure to meet the JCPOA obligations and their alignment with the US in targeting Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, have flagrantly violated UNSCR 2231 and therefore lack the legal and moral competence to invoke the snapback mechanism with the purpose of reinstating the previously revoked Security Council resolutions.

The foreign ministers of Iran and Russia also assessed the path forward for the nuclear negotiations and stressed that the UNSCR 2231 should expire on schedule.

Araqchi outlined Iran’s principled position regarding European proposals to extend the resolution, emphasizing that any decision on an extension comes within the purview of the UN Security Council and its members.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued interaction and consultations at various levels to advance their shared positions.
