Iran Condemns US’ New Sanctions on Cuba

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson condemned the fresh sanctions the US has imposed against Cuba.

“Once again, the US addiction to coercion & bullying has targeted a sovereign nation that is determined to exercise its right of self-determination and preserve its independence and dignity,” Esmaeil Baqaei said in a post on his X account on Sunday.

“In continuation of its criminal economic ‘blockade’ of Cuba, the US has introduced a new set of sanctions against Cuban people. We unequivocally condemn these inhuman measures that contravene fundamental principles of int'l law and adversely affect the fundamental human rights of the Cuban people,” he said.

“Such unjust & unlawful unilateral coercive measures would never affect the resolve of the Cuban people and their leadership in resisting American domineering whims. Iran, having endured decades of US unlawful sanctions, stands in full solidarity with the people and government of Cuba and wishes them continued strength and resilience,” the spokesman added.

On July 12, the US State Department imposed sanctions on senior Cuban officials, including President Miguel Diaz-Canel.

In January, then-US President Joe Biden had removed Cuba from the blacklist of countries sponsoring terrorism.

But Donald Trump returned the country to the blacklist immediately after returning to the White House as he resumed his “maximum pressure” campaign against Cuba that typified his foreign policy during his first term.
