Israeli Airstrike Hits Generators at Indonesian Hospital in Gaza, Ignites Fire
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An Israeli airstrike struck the power generators of the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza late Monday, sparking a large fire and endangering the lives of patients, according to local medical officials.
The strike targeted the hospital in Beit Lahia amid an ongoing military siege by Israeli forces, Gaza’s Health Ministry told Anadolu Agency.
Munir al-Bursh, director general of the Health Ministry, said the hospital lost power after the attack and remains home to many patients and injured individuals receiving treatment.
“The bombing of the generators poses a serious threat to their lives,” al-Bursh warned.
He said that the Israeli military is disregarding both the health system and international humanitarian law by continuing to strike medical infrastructure.
Gaza’s Civil Defense said it received distress calls from hospital staff about a fire that erupted in the external generators and spread to parts of the hospital.
The agency added that its teams were working to coordinate access to the facility to contain the blaze despite the dangerous security situation in the area.
On Sunday, al-Bursh reported that Israeli tanks and bulldozers had encircled the hospital, endangering patients and medical staff.
The same day, Israel launched a new ground offensive in various parts of Gaza, calling it “Operation Gideon’s Chariots,” in further escalation of its genocidal war campaign.
Israel began its offensive on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023, and has since been repeatedly targeting hospitals and health infrastructure, rendering most facilities inoperative, according to Palestinian and UN sources.
Of the 38 hospitals in Gaza, only 19 remain partially functional — including eight public and 11 private institutions — while nine field hospitals continue to provide emergency care, the Health Ministry said.
The military campaign has resulted in the deaths of nearly 53,500 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children, according to Gaza health authorities.
The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defense minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its conduct in the enclave.
