Gaza Death Toll Surpasses 52,800 As Israeli Strikes Hit Displaced Civilians

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – At least eight Palestinians, including four children, were killed in Israeli airstrikes on tents sheltering displaced people in Khan Younis, as Gaza's death toll continues to climb past 52,800, local officials said Sunday.

Israeli airstrikes overnight targeted three tents housing displaced families in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, Gaza's civil defence reported.

"Eight people, including four children aged two to five and two women" were killed, said Mahmud Bassal, a spokesman for the civil defence agency.

Footage from AFP showed emergency workers retrieving bodies in darkness, one zipped in a white plastic bag and another wrapped in a blanket.

A wounded infant was also seen being evacuated.
According to Bassal, Israeli forces also demolished five homes with explosives in eastern Gaza City and shelled the Abassa area east of Khan Younis.

No casualties were immediately reported from those incidents.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said 19 people were killed and 81 wounded in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of injuries since October to 119,554.

"Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them," the ministry said in a statement.

The Israeli military resumed brutal war in Gaza on March 18, following a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in January.

Since then, 2,720 people have been killed and 7,513 wounded, according to the ministry.

The International Criminal Court in November issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.

Israel is also facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice related to its ongoing military campaign in the enclave.
