Trump Says US Must Acquire Greenland for National, International Security
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – US President Donald Trump on Wednesday emphasized the necessity of US control over Greenland, arguing it is critical for both national and international security.
“We very need Greenland from the standpoint of national security and international security, we have to do something with Greenland,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, as reported by Forbes Breaking News.
When asked if the topic was part of ongoing discussions with European leaders or Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump denied it.
“We have to have Greenland because of the national security picture, even more so now than it would have been 20 years ago, 30 years ago when they talked about it then too,” Trump said.
He elaborated further, pointing to advancements in weaponry and aviation as reasons for Greenland's growing significance. “You know, they used to talk about it. Years ago, they were talking about Greenland. But now with, you know, modern weaponry, planes, and the speed of planes, and all of the things, so we have to have Greenland,” he argued.
Greenland, a Danish territory since 1953, has drawn Trump’s interest for its strategic location and abundant natural resources. The president’s comments have fueled tensions, particularly after he refused to rule out economic or military measures to secure the territory, describing it as vital to "the protection of the free world."
Trump has previously referred to owning Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, likening it to a significant real estate acquisition.
Similarly, he has proposed controversial plans to expel Palestinians from Gaza and develop the area, which he also described as a “big real estate site.” Both Denmark and Greenland’s residents have firmly rejected his ambitions for the Arctic territory.
