More Italians Join Nationwide Protest against Overpriced Energy Bills (+Video)
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Protesters gathered in downtown Perugia in Italy on Monday to burn energy bills to slam what they deemed as the government's inaction in the face of soaring energy prices.
"It is clear that Minister Cingolani's proposal to give aid of 15 percent when we have increases of 300 and 400 percent seems like a joke to us," said a protester in response to statements made by Italian Minister for Ecological Transition.
Footage showed protesters displaying their increased gas and electricity bills and then burning them in an act of protest. "For us, these indiscriminate and unjustified increases are putting us in a lot of difficulties," said Gianni Segoloni.
Italy which relies heavily on energy imports is set to double its net energy import cost to nearly 100 billion euros ($99.5 billion) amid the evolving energy crisis in Europe.
