Iran Urges South Korea to Act Responsibly as UNSC President

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi met South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun in New York, urging Seoul as UN Security Council president to uphold its duty and help block any illegal bid by three European states to revive expired sanctions against Iran.

During the meeting, the ministers discussed bilateral relations and international developments.

Araqchi denounced the unlawful and unjustified move by three European states to re-impose Security Council resolutions that were terminated under the 2015 nuclear deal.

He stressed that South Korea, as Council president, bears a key responsibility to prevent misuse of the body and to safeguard diplomatic progress.

Araqchi outlined recent Iranian initiatives, including a new understanding with the International Atomic Energy Agency to maintain cooperation, and said obstruction by the three European states and the United States reflects their unlawful, excessive approach over the past two decades.

He warned that any attempt to restore the cancelled resolutions would be a severe blow to diplomacy and the global non-proliferation regime, with unpredictable consequences, holding the sponsors fully accountable.

Araqchi expressed hope that the Security Council’s presidency and all member states would recognize their historic duty and block any illegal effort to revive the expired measures against Iran.

On his part, South Korea’s foreign minister reaffirmed Seoul’s commitment to diplomacy and noted its abstention on the European-drafted resolution to extend Iran sanctions, pledging to perform the Council presidency role with professionalism and neutrality.
