Araqchi Warns EU3 against Snapback Mechanism
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi cautioned the European troika against resorting to the so-called snapback mechanism of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), warning that such a move would have dire consequences for them.
In a message posted on his X account, Araqchi rejected any legal, political, or moral grounds for the EU3 to invoke the mechanism, stressing that even the option itself has lost its validity.
“It is not just that the E3 has no legal, political, or moral entitlement to invoke ‘snapback’, and that even if they did, ‘use or lose it’ doesn’t work,” the Iranian foreign minister wrote.
He went on to describe the Europeans’ dilemma in blunt terms, saying the “correct expression for the E3’s dilemma is ‘use it *and* lose it’. Or better yet, ‘use it and lose it *all*’.”
Araqchi’s remarks come amid growing tensions over the future of the JCPOA, as Western parties have continued to level accusations against Iran while failing to fulfill their own commitments under the 2015 nuclear agreement.
The Iranian officials have stressed that Tehran will not remain indifferent to any unlawful or provocative measures, warning that European states would be the ones to bear the costs of undermining diplomacy.
