Gaza Death Toll Approaches 62,000 As Starvation Claims More Lives
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Health Ministry in Gaza announced Sunday that the number of Palestinians killed in the ongoing Israeli aggression has risen to at least 61,944 since October 2023.
According to the ministry, 47 bodies were recovered in the past 24 hours, with 226 more people wounded, bringing the total number of injuries from Israeli bombardments to 155,886.
“Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the streets as rescuers are unable to reach them,” the ministry said.
The statement added that 14 Palestinians were killed and more than 132 wounded when Israeli forces opened fire on crowds seeking humanitarian aid. Since May 27, at least 1,938 Palestinians have been killed and over 14,420 others injured in similar incidents.
Seven Palestinians, including two children, died of starvation in the past day amid Israel’s suffocating blockade, raising the total death toll from hunger and malnutrition since October to 258, with 110 of the victims being children.
Israel has kept all Gaza border crossings shut since March 2, imposing famine-like conditions on the territory’s 2.4 million residents.
Following the collapse of a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement in January, Israel resumed its attacks on March 18, killing 10,400 more Palestinians and wounding 43,845.
The Israeli regime’s leadership is facing mounting international legal pressure. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants in November for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former war minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. In parallel, Israel is also defending itself against a genocide case at the International Court of Justice.
