Muscat Talks Seen as Litmus Test for US’ Intent, Iranian Spokesman Says
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – While Iran has given diplomacy a genuine chance by agreeing to hold indirect negotiations with the US in Oman, it will be evaluating the other side’s seriousness in the talks, Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Esmaeil Baqaei said.
“In earnest & with candid vigilance we are giving diplomacy a genuine chance,” Baqaei said in a post on his X account on Friday.
“US should value this decision formed despite their prevailing confrontational hoopla,” he stated.
“We do not prejudge… We do not predict… We intend to assess the other side’s intent & resolve this Saturday,” the Iranian spokesman underlined.
“We shall reflect and respond accordingly,” he added.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced on Tuesday that the only subject that will be mooted at the upcoming indirect negotiations with the US in Oman is the nuclear issue and assurances about the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program.
The foreign minister had already confirmed to Tasnim that the talks in Muscat will be led by him and US presidential envoy Steve Witkoff.
