Iran Denounces Pressure on Venezuela over Election Result
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan government and nation, roundly dismissing external pressures on the Latin American country over the result of its recent presidential election.
In a post on his X account on Friday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani stressed the need to respect the vote and choice of the Venezuelan people within the framework of the right to self-determination of nations.
“While expressing our solidarity and firm support for the Venezuelan nation and government, we declare our opposition to any foreign pressure and interference in the internal affairs of the country and believe that the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has the necessary capacity and determination to protect and guarantee the fundamental rights of the people of that country within the framework of the Constitution,” Kanaani said, the ministry’s website reported.
Protesters have taken to the streets in Venezuela in recent days as opposition leaders are disputing the results of the recent election that saw President Nicolas Maduro secure another term in power.
The demonstrations come after Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) formally confirmed that Maduro had been re-elected by a majority of Venezuelans to another six-year term as president “for the period 2025-2031”.
That announcement fueled widespread anger and pushed thousands of Venezuelans to take to the streets of several neighborhoods in Caracas and elsewhere to voice their opposition to Maduro and his government.
Maduro has dismissed international criticism and doubts about the result of voting, saying that Venezuela was the target of an attempted “coup d’etat” of a “fascist and counter-revolutionary” nature.
