Persepolis Beats Esteghlal to Win Iran’s Hazfi Cup Title
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Persepolis football team beat Esteghlal 2-1 on Wednesday to win Iran’s 2022-23 Hazfi Cup.
Mehdi Torabi was on target for Persepolis in the 30th minute but Mohammad Hossein Moradmand equalized the match with a header in the dying moments of the match in front of 60,000 cheering fans at the Azadi Stadium and the two teams went to extra times.
Persepolis captain Omid Alishah scored the winner in the 115th minute from a set-piece.
Esteghlal and Persepolis have played each other 101 times in the Tehran derby. Persepolis has won 27 matches, while Esteghlal emerged victorious 26 times and 48 matches ended in a draw.
Persepolis also equaled Esteghlal’s record of winning the Hazfi Cup seven times.
Persepolis won a treble in the 2022-23 season by winning the Iran Professional League, Hazfi Cup and Super Cup.
