Iran Advocates Peaceful Solutions in Syria

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – President of Iran Hassan Rouhani urged the need for peaceful settlement of the conflicts in Syria by maintaining cooperation with Turkey and Russia.

In a telephone conversation with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday evening, Rouhani underlined that Iran has always supported dialogue and employment of peaceful methods to resolve the problems in Syria.

He also called for constant talks among Iran, Turkey and Russia – the three guarantors states of the Astana peace format – to address the crisis in Syria and pave the way for the return of the displaced Syrian people.

The Iranian president also noted that unity among the countries that have been targeted by US sanctions is the only way to counter “unilateral and illegal” measures taken by Washington.

Pointing to the unlawful measures by the administration of former US president Donald Trump, he added, “Lifting sanctions (imposed) by the US is a legal and rational demand by Iran, which we have repeatedly emphasized, and if it happens, Iran will return to its commitments (under the 2015 nuclear agreement).”

As it has constantly been announced, Iran would employ an “action for action” policy in the face of the new US administration, he stated.

The Turkish president, for his part, called for the expansion of mutual relations and holding sessions of joint commissions to boost trade cooperation between Turkey and the Islamic Republic.

Erdogan said effective negotiations would play a leading role in promoting peace and security in the region, Press TV reported.

There is now a positive and appropriate atmosphere in the international arena for the settlement of issues and the removal of unjust US sanctions through diplomatic channels, Erdogan added.
