Iran’s Entitlement to JCPOA Benefits Emphasized in SCO Summit: Zarif
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s foreign minister said the country’s right to enjoy the economic benefits of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and implementation of the nuclear deal by the non-US signatories have been highlighted in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China.
In an interview with IRNA, Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced Iran’s views in the SCO summit and that the JCPOA was supported in the summit as an international agreement.
The SCO conference provided Rouhani with an opportunity to hold meetings with his Chinese and Russian counterparts, whose countries are among the signatories of the JCPOA, the Foreign Ministry’s official website quoted Zarif as saying.
The minister also added that the commitments of the Chinese and the Russians were discussed in the meetings to make sure that Iran will fully enjoy the economic benefits of the JCPOA, which was obviously seen in the remarks of the Chinese and Russian presidents.
Accompanied by a high-profile delegation, Rouhani met several top foreign officials on the sidelines of the two-day summit in China.
The SCO was established in Shanghai in 2001, with China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as founding members.
This year’s summit followed the US president’s May 8 decision to pull his country out of the JCPOA, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after years of negotiations among Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany).
Following the US exit, Iran and the remaining parties launched talks to save the accord.
