US Veto Shields Israel’s Genocide in Gaza, Isolates Washington at UN: Amnesty
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The United States once again used its veto power at the UN Security Council to block a resolution demanding a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, a move widely condemned as a political cover for Israel’s ongoing campaign of annihilation against the Palestinian people.
For the sixth time, Washington has vetoed a Security Council draft that sought an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, full humanitarian access, and the release of all hostages. Fourteen members voted in favor, leaving the United States isolated in its defense of Israel’s crimes.
Amnesty International’s Secretary General Agnès Callamard denounced the decision, calling it “morally reprehensible” and a “greenlight for Israel’s genocide.” She warned that instead of halting the “endless catalogue of horrors,” the United States has once again ensured Israel’s bloodshed will continue.
The veto comes just two days after a UN Commission of Inquiry confirmed that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. Despite this damning evidence, Washington continues to provide Israel with massive military, political, and diplomatic support.
The consequences of this US-backed war are catastrophic. In Gaza City, Israel’s onslaught is forcing hundreds of thousands to flee south into unsafe and uninhabitable areas. The bombardment is erasing the city’s heritage and Palestinian identity, accelerating what Callamard described as a campaign of “annihilation.”
By shielding Israel from accountability, the United States is not only complicit in genocide but is also undermining international law itself. Callamard warned that this policy of blind support “endangers the lives of Palestinians in Gaza and even the remaining Israeli hostages.”
“History will not forgive the USA for standing alone against the international community,” she said. “By arming and backing Israel’s relentless campaign, Washington is deeply implicated in war crimes and crimes against humanity.”
Amnesty called on all states to exert maximum pressure on Israel, including an immediate ban on arms sales, surveillance equipment, and all trade or investment that enables Tel Aviv’s war crimes.
The US veto, while isolating Washington diplomatically, emboldens Israel to continue its genocide under the shield of American protection.
