Fighting Erupts in Eastern Syria As SDF Reports Casualties in Daesh Assault

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Renewed fighting in Syria’s east claimed the life of a fighter from the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) after an attack by Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) sleeper cells near Deir ez-Zur, the group announced.

The SDF said its fighters came under fire from “sleeper cells of Desh” terro group, targeting a patrol on the outskirts of Deir ez-Zur.

The group confirmed that one of its members was killed while two more sustained injuries during the assault.

The announcement came hours after Ahmad al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani and head of Syria’s interim government, warned that failure to integrate the SDF into the Syrian army before the end of this year would carry “serious consequences.”

Last week, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) held military drills near the Syrian border involving armored and infantry units.

According to a PMU statement, the exercises included the 1st Armored Combat Battalion, the 30th and 31st Brigades, and other elite forces.

The drills followed last week’s announcement of a large-scale security operation in Anbar province to track down Daesh fugitives and weapons caches in the desert near al-Qaim.

Border areas between Iraq and Syria have recently seen increased militant activity, with reports of clashes near the town of Al-Bukamal and in Horan, raising fears of further escalation.
