EU’s Kallas Faces Backlash for Push to End Iran’s Nuclear Program

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi hit back at EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas for her mistaken outlook that negotiations with Iran should end its nuclear program.

“If the Coordinator of the JCPOA Joint Commission believes that the objective of any potential negotiation is ‘ending Iran’s nuclear program’, it means that:

- EU High Representative Kaja Kallas disregards the provisions of the NPT, which explicitly affirm the right of all signatories to develop, research, and use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

- The provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and the JCPOA no longer hold any validity for its official Coordinator, thereby rendering the so-called snapback mechanism baseless.

- The participation and role of the European Union and its member states, plus UK, in any future negotiation would be irrelevant and therefore meaningless,” Araqchi said in a post on his X account on Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign minister’s comments came in reaction to a post by Kallas, who insisted on the immediate restart of negotiations on what she called “ending Iran’s nuclear program”.

She has also called for the resumption of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, without making any mention of the unlawful Israeli and US military strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.

While the Zionist regime waged a war of aggression against Iran on June 13 and struck Iran’s military, nuclear and residential areas for 12 days, the US stepped in and conducted military attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran’s Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan on June 22.

The Iranian Parliament passed a bill on June 25 to put the ties with the IAEA on hold after a biased report from IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi against Iran paved the way for a resolution by the Board of Governors that subsequently encouraged the Israeli regime and the US to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities in violation of the UN Charter and all international laws.
