Futility of Sanctions Led to Negotiations, Iran’s FM Says
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s success in nullifying the cruel sanctions has frustrated those imposing them and forced them to enter into negotiations out of desperation, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said.
Addressing a conference on economic diplomacy, held in Iran’s southern city of Shiraz on Thursday, Araqchi highlighted the Islamic Republic’s success in rendering the sanctions abortive.
Pointing to the Foreign Ministry’s efforts to neutralize the sanctions and help the domestic economy get rid of them, he said the more successfully Iran thwarts the sanctions, the more disheartened those enforcing the embargoes will become.
The minister noted that frustration of the sanctions will benefit Iran in the course of talks.
Araqchi stated that what brought the other sides to the negotiating table was their disappointment at the futility of the sanctions and the realization that the sanctions have failed to bring the Iranian people and government to their knees.
The resistance shown by the Iranian nation and business people have prevented the so-called crippling sanctions from having the desired effect, Araqchi stated.
Iran and the US have held four rounds of talks since April 12, mediated by Oman, with the purpose of reaching a deal on Iran’s nuclear program and the removal of sanctions on Tehran.
The fifth round of indirect negotiations will be held in Rome on Friday, May 23.
