Child Injured in Knife Incident at School in Southern Finland

The incident occurred during recess at Renko School, located approximately 15 km from the city center of Hameenlinna. Police said they were alerted at 9:40 a.m. local time and responded to the scene with several patrol units, Xinhua reported.

According to police, the school's principal, who was supervising the recess, intervened immediately and separated the two children. The suspect was in the principal's custody when officers arrived. The injured student sustained minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

"There was no danger to other pupils at any point," the police said in a statement.

Detective Inspector Jani Stepanoff said authorities have begun interviewing those involved. He declined to comment on the motive or further details, citing the early stage of the investigation.

Both the suspect and the victim are under the age of 12, below the threshold of criminal responsibility in Finland.

The school, which has approximately 130 students across grades one to nine, has notified parents about the incident. Authorities said the situation is under control.

The incident came just one day after a separate stabbing at a school in Pirkkala, near the city of Tampere, also in southern Finland. Three students were injured in that case, and a fourth student has been arrested as the suspect. The injured students received medical treatment and their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
