Spokesman Rejects Arab League Statement on Iranian Islands
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry refuted the claims made in the final statement of an Arab League summit regarding Iran’s sovereignty over three Persian Gulf islands, which he emphasized are an inseparable part of the Iranian territory.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei roundly rejected the claims in the statement of the Arab League summit, held in Baghdad, concerning the three Persian Gulf Islands of the Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa.
He reiterated that the three islands would remain an inseparable and eternal part of the Iranian soil forever.
The Islamic Republic of Iran slams any claim on the Iranian islands as a contravention of the UN Charter and the international law regarding respect for the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of countries and the principles of good neighborliness, he said on Monday.
The spokesman described as “unacceptable” the fact that such issue has been mooted in the final statement of the Arab League summit.
Baqaei finally advised the Arab League member states to consider the immutable historical and geographical facts in their stances instead of making unfounded claims and to push to strengthen understanding and relations among the regional countries.
The islands of the Greater Tunb, the Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa have historically been part of Iran, proof of which can be found and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world.
