Ingredient in Energy Drinks Linked to Blood Cancer Risk

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Taurine, a common ingredient in energy drinks like Red Bull and Celsius, may accelerate blood cancer growth, according to new research.

A study published in Nature by the University of Rochester’s Wilmot Cancer Institute found that leukemia cells consume taurine to drive glycolysis —the breakdown of glucose for energy— which fuels cancer growth.

Taurine occurs naturally in the human body and in foods such as meat and fish. It is also added to many energy drinks to enhance mental focus and reduce inflammation.

Though taurine has shown benefits, including easing chemotherapy side effects in leukemia patients, the study raises concerns over its supplemental use.

Mice with the SLC6A6 gene —which moves taurine through the body— were given human leukemia cells. Researchers observed that healthy bone marrow cells produced taurine, which was then transferred to the leukemia cells, possibly aiding their growth.

“The study highlights a need to reconsider taurine supplementation, especially for leukemia patients,” the researchers stated.

They warned that excessive taurine from energy drinks or supplements might worsen leukemia by supplying more fuel to cancer cells.

The research is ongoing, with scientists exploring if targeting taurine transport could lead to new treatments.

They are also investigating whether taurine may play a role in other cancers, including colorectal cancer.

The American Cancer Society estimates that over 192,000 Americans will be diagnosed with blood cancer in 2025, including 66,890 with leukemia, 89,070 with lymphoma, and 36,110 with myeloma.
