Iran's Parliament Speaker Arrives in Jakarta for PUIC Summit

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf arrived in Jakarta on Wednesday to attend the 19th session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC), hosted by Indonesia.

Qalibaf was welcomed by Indonesian officials upon arrival in the capital.

The summit, held from May 11 to 14, focuses on “Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience.”

Iran’s delegation includes MPs Rouhollah Motefakker Azad, Sara Fallahi, Seyed Yahya Soleimani, and Mohammad Mehdi Shahriari, attending both official and expert-level meetings.

The PUIC seeks to promote Islamic values, highlight Islamic civilization, and support consultation and participation in governance tailored to each member state’s conditions.

The union also aims to strengthen parliamentary cooperation, create a unified framework for experience-sharing, and jointly address political, cultural, and economic challenges, including resistance to domination and Islamophobia.

Further goals include expanding international parliamentary relations, defending human rights, promoting justice and sustainable peace, and upholding non-interference and national sovereignty in line with the OIC and UN charters.

So far, Iranian representatives have addressed sessions in the General Committee, Political Committee, Cultural Committee, Women's Committee, and the Standing Committee on Palestine.

Additional members of the Iranian delegation are Mohsen Zanganeh, head of the Iran-Indonesia parliamentary friendship group, as well as MPs Kamran Pouladi, Zahra Saeedi, Othman Salari, and Mohammad Hossein Mohammadi.

Senior parliamentary staff and advisors accompanying Qalibaf include Abolfazl Amouei, special assistant for international affairs; Vahid Jalalzadeh, parliamentary deputy at the Foreign Ministry; Saeed Ahadian, media adviser to the speaker; and Iman Shamsaei, director of the parliament's media and communications office.
