Iran Condemns IAEA’s ‘Unconstructive’ Resolution
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the move by a number of members of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors to pass a politically-motivated and unconstructive resolution against Iran.
In a statement on Wednesday night, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nasser Kanaani strongly condemned the IAEA Board of Governors’ resolution, which has criticized Iran.
Condemning the proposal and adoption of the anti-Iranian resolution as a “political and unconstructive” measure, the spokesman said it follows the previous failed policies of a number of Western countries and amounts to an attempt at the political abuse of the international mechanisms against sovereign states.
Iran is committed to continued technical cooperation with the IAEA within the framework of its international rights and duties and in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the Safeguards Agreement, he stated.
Kanaani underlined that the recent resolution could by no means undermine Iran’s determination to continue employing peaceful nuclear energy and carrying out its nuclear development plans in compliance with its rights enshrined in the relevant international treaties.
His comments came after the UN nuclear watchdog’s 35-nation Board of Governors passed a resolution on Wednesday calling on Iran to step up cooperation with the IAEA and reverse what it called the barring of inspectors.
The motion brought by the UK, France and Germany –but opposed by China and Russia– at the IAEA Board is the first of its kind since November 2022.
The resolution was carried by 20 votes in favor –including the US, which initially was reluctant for fear of aggravating Middle East tensions– with 12 abstentions and one country not participating.
