EU3 Has No Right to Invoke Snapback Mechanism: Iranian Spokesman
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry questioned the European troika’s authority to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism of the 2015 nuclear deal, saying Tehran is considering all scenarios and trying to prevent costly happenings.
In comments at a weekly presser on Tuesday, Esmaeil Baqaei emphasized that the European troika –the UK, France and Germany- have no right to misuse the snapback mechanism under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
He noted that Tehran has long included this issue in its diplomatic agenda. “We have undertaken extensive efforts, including today’s (planned) talks in Geneva as well as discussions with China and Russia.”
Regarding Russia’s draft resolution, he stated that Iran is fully aware of the text and is currently reviewing it.
On the attempts to activate the snapback mechanism and coordination with Russia and China, the spokesman said, “Our approach is not about creating costs, but ensuring our own national interests. We have not neglected any tool to safeguard these interests. In addition to Russia and China, we continue talks with the three European countries. This process is ongoing, and we have full confidence in our capabilities.”
He stressed that Iran engages with Europe because it is ready for dialogue and remains a member of the JCPOA.
Asked about Iran’s actions if the snapback mechanism is triggered, he responded, “Yes, we have considered all scenarios. We take all possibilities into account, but at this stage our focus is on preventing events that could be costly for the country.”
Regarding red lines in the negotiations with the European parties, Baqaei stressed, “Our red line is national interests.”
A new round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the European troika will be held in Geneva today.
On Friday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke by phone with his counterparts from the UK, France, Germany, and the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. He warned the European parties that any attempt to trigger the snapback mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal would be legally baseless, morally unjustified, and carry serious consequences.
Araqchi further cautioned that the three European states lack the authority to invoke the mechanism. Addressing European suggestions to extend UN Security Council Resolution 2231 to allow more time for diplomacy, he stressed that such a decision falls solely under the jurisdiction of the Security Council. While reaffirming Iran’s principled stance, he said Tehran would not involve itself in that process.
For their part, the EU3 and the EU foreign policy chief reiterated their commitment to pursuing a diplomatic solution.
