Iran, Russia Mull over Plans to Attain Transiting 10 Million Tons of Goods
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Transport officials from Iran and Russia weighed plans to attain the transit of 10 million tons of goods between the two countries via Iranian soil.
In a meeting held via videoconference, Iran’s Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Shahriar Afandizadeh and his Russian counterpart discussed bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the fields of infrastructure, transportation and transit.
The officials mulled over the main topics of cooperation in the fields of transit, the way of achieving the objectives of transiting 10 million tons of goods via the Iranian soil, examining the road map proposed by Iran and solutions submitted by the Russian Federation in this respect.
They also exchanged views on port-related cooperation between the two countries, especially in the Caspian Sea, negotiations to enhance shipping cooperation in the Caspian Sea and the proper capacity of Iranian ports for transporting the goods forwarded to the country from Russia.
In this meeting, Afandizadeh highlighted the trend of the physical progress of the construction operation of the Rasht-Astara Railway and called for accelerating the completion of the railway.
Iran is ready to transport more than two million tons of goods via the country’s land to the Russian Federation from the eastern part of the Caspian Sea, Afandizadeh stated.
It was agreed that the two sides will finalize the protocol of the 14th meeting of the Iran-Russia Transport Cooperation within the next week so that it can be signed on the sidelines of the Iran-Russia Joint Economic Cooperation Meeting.
