Iran Urges Humanitarian Corridor in Gaza
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran stressed the need for a humanitarian corridor to evacuate the injured civilians from the Gaza Strip, where the Israeli regime has been pounding heavily for a week.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) must act immediately to send humanitarian aid to Gaza, Hossein Amirabdollahian said at a meeting with Tor Wennesland, the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, held in Beirut.
The top Iranian diplomat also called on the UN and the ICRC to push for the opening of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza to evacuate injured civilians.
The Gaza Strip remains under an Israeli siege that is preventing civilians from leaving the devastated enclave while blocking food, water, fuel and medical supplies into the enclave.
Amirabdollahian took a swipe at the US for calling for self-restraint, while it is supporting the Zionist regime’s brutalities against Palestinians in Gaza.
The UN must act urgently to stop the Israeli strikes on civilians in Gaza, because tomorrow will be late, the foreign minister warned.
Pointing to reports that the Israeli regime has used white phosphorus in its continuing military operations in Gaza and Lebanon, Amirabdollahian said the UN should set up an investigative team to address the issue.
He also voiced Iran’s support for the UN secretary general’s political initiatives for peace in Gaza.
For his part, Wennesland expressed concern about the tragic situation in Gaza and the possibility of spread of war to the region and deterioration of the crisis.
The UN coordinator also noted that he will keep holding consultations with Iran to weigh plans for the cessation of war in Gaza.
More than 320 Palestinians have been killed in the past 24 hours, including many women and children killed in Israeli air raids on convoys fleeing Gaza City.
The rising toll comes as the Zionist regime continues bombing Gaza a day after telling 1.1 million residents to head south ahead of a looming ground offensive following Hamas’s Al-Aqsa Storm operation outside Gaza last week.
At least 2,215 Palestinians were killed and 8,714 wounded in Israeli air attacks on Gaza.
In the occupied West Bank, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in the past week has topped 50. More than 1,000 have been wounded and dozens arrested.
