Iran Serious About Return to JCPOA: FM
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The foreign minister of Iran said Tehran will return to the 2015 nuclear deal as soon as the other parties resume honoring their commitments.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held a meeting with Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York on Saturday.
The foreign minister briefed the UN chief on the good progress in the relations between Iran and the neighboring, Arab and Muslim states.
Pointing to the exchange of prisoners between Iran and the US following the release of Iran’s frozen assets in South Korea, Amirabdollahian said Tehran has always “good consultations” with the UN about the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The Iranian foreign minister noted that the exchange of messages with the US is in progress and a proposal made by the Sultan of Oman is still on the table, adding, “If the other (JCPOA) parties are prepared, we’ll be serious about returning to the JCPOA so that all parties would resume honoring their commitments under the JCPOA within the framework of Oman’s initiative.”
On the course of cooperation between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency, Amirabdollahian said whenever the UN nuclear agency acts within technical frameworks, every process is on the right track, but when the other parties prefer their political ideas to the IAEA’s professional procedures, the situation gets worse.
The foreign minister reiterated that nuclear weapons have no place in Iran’s doctrine.
Referring to the crisis in Ukraine, Amirabdollahian underlined that Iran respects the territorial integrity of all countries, including Ukraine, and does not consider war to be a solution.
For his part, the UN chief thanked the Iranian foreign minister for sharing his views.
He also appreciated Iran’s diplomatic initiatives for the settlement of problems, the removal of obstacles, and promotion of relations with the other countries.
