Iran Ready to Help Syria Rebuild Water, Electricity Industry: Energy Minister

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Iranian minister of energy said the country is ready to help Syria reconstruct its water and electricity industry.

Ali Akbar Mehrabian made the remarks late Saturday in his meeting with Syria’s Minister of Water Resources Tammam Raad, adding, “Today, we are ready to provide Syria with our high technical and economic capabilities in the reconstruction of the Arab country.”

Turning to the longstanding history of Iran’s cooperation and bilateral relations with Syria in various fields, including water and electricity, Mehrabian said supplying electricity to Syria is one of the most important fields of cooperation, and this was emphasized in a meeting held with senior Syrian officials.

Presently, there is an 8,000-megawatt power plant capacity in Syria, only 2,500 megawatt of which is in service, he said, adding that the Iranian Ministry of Energy has recently repaired two power plant units in Aleppo.

Also, two gas power plant projects are ready to be inaugurated in Syria that were constructed by competent Iranian companies, he continued.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the Iranian minister of energy expressed hope for the implementation of the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed during a recent visit by Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

He further said Syria is home to rich water resources and an age-old agricultural industry, adding that Iran is ready to cooperate with Syria in the field of constructing water canals, irrigation and drainage systems.

The Syrian minister of water resources, for his part, expressed his thanks to Iran for its support for the Syrian government and people in difficult times.

Welcoming Iran’s participation in rebuilding Syria, Tammam Raad stated that a contract for the construction of two wastewater treatment houses has been signed with Iran’s private sector previously and it is hoped that a new credit line will be activated soon in this regard.
