Iran, Switzerland Discuss Situation in Syria, Yemen
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian and Swiss diplomats weighed plans to help resolve the crisis in Yemen and assist the people in northern Syria who are suffering problems in the aftermath of a recent devastating earthquake.
Head of the Middle East and North Africa Division of Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland Maya Tissafi met with senior adviser to Iran’s foreign minister in political affairs Ali Asghar Khaji in Tehran.
The two diplomats discussed the latest developments in Syria after the recent earthquake, the fragile humanitarian situation in the Arab country, as well as the political developments in Syria and Yemen.
Khaji expressed regret over the deadly quake in Syria and called for greater cooperation from the international community in sending humanitarian aid to Syrians.
He also noted that the Israeli regime’s attacks on residential areas in Syria show the aggressive nature of the Zionist regime while the Syrian people are trying to retrieve the bodies of their loved ones from the debris.
Khaji also pointed to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, stressing the need for the immediate removal of the humanitarian and economic siege on Yemen and for the establishment of a ceasefire in the Arab country.
The Iranian officials maintain that the crisis in Yemen has no military solution.
The Saudi-led coalition, in collaboration with its Arab allies and with arms and logistics support from the US and other Western states, launched a devastating war on Yemen in March 2015 with the objective of crushing the popular Ansarullah resistance movement and reinstating the Riyadh-friendly regime of Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.
Despite failing to achieve any of its objectives, the war has left hundreds of thousands of Yemenis dead and spawned the world's worst humanitarian crisis.
