FM Says Iran Not to Be Rushed by West Into Ignoring Red Lines
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said the West's haste to reach an agreement through the Vienna talks will not make Tehran to ignore its red lines.
Referring to the diplomatic efforts to revive the 2015 Iran deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Amirabdollahian made the remarks in a phone call by European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Friday.
“We are ready to immediately finalize a good agreement,” he said. “But the Western side’s rush and haste cannot prevent Iran’s red lines from being observed.”
He also stated that the presence of foreign ministers in Vienna and the declaration of a final deal would be contingent on the Islamic Republic's announced red lines being fully respected, including an effective guarantee securing Iran's economic benefits from the JCPOA.
"In constant and active consultation with all delegations, Dr. Bagheri and our country's senior experts are in Vienna, meeting with all delegations. Our delegation will continue to work hard to get a good accord," the leading Iranian diplomat added.
On his part, Borell also said Iran’s major demands have been addressed in the possible final agreement.
He stated that progress has been made throughout the talks and that the negotiations are on the right track to a final outcome.
The Vienna discussions between Iran and the other parties to the Iran deal began in April on the assumption that the US, under the administration of Joe Biden, would be willing to rejoin the JCPOA.
Former US President Donald Trump abandoned the JCPOA in May 2018 in pursuit of illegal "maximum pressure" sanctions against Iran.
