Demonstrators Gather for Another Night of Protests in Portland (+Video)
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Thousands of people gathered in Portland, US state of Oregon, for another night of protests on Friday
Protests in Portland in the name of Black Lives Matter continued all over the city even as the withdraw of federal police officers created a shift in tone to more peaceful activities, especially downtown near the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse and Justice Center.
Protesters gathered near the Multnomah County Justice Center on Friday night for the 65th consecutive night of demonstrations in Portland, just one day after federal officers began their phased withdrawal and Oregon State Police assumed control of federal buildings in the city.
In contrast to previous nights that were full of tear gas and explosions, the demonstrators quietly convened around a platform to listen to speakers, and there were reportedly no interventions from law enforcement.
The presence of federal officers had reignited tensions in the city in recent weeks, leading to multiple injuries and scenes of violence as demonstrations became increasingly militant.
According to authorities, the Oregon State Police will continue managing security in the city for at least two weeks, in collaboration with the Portland Police Bureau.
