Coronavirus in Iran: Number of Cities in Red Category Dropping
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The number of cities in Iran’s southwestern province of Khuzestan categorized as ‘red zones’ (with high risk of coronavirus epidemic) has decreased from 16 to 9, the Health Ministry’s spokesman said Sunday.
Speaking at a daily press conference, Kianoosh Jahanpoor said although the epidemic situation in Khuzestan is still critical, the number of cities categorized as red zones has fallen to 9.
He also noted that the number of people tested positive for COVID-19 across the country has risen to 171,789 following the detection of 2,364 new cases since Saturday.
He said 134,349 patients have recovered from coronavirus infection so far and have been discharged from the hospital.
According to Jahanpoor, the coronavirus death toll in Iran now stands at 8,291 following the death of 72 patients over the past 24 hours.
Among those undergoing treatment in the hospital at present, 2,596 patients have critical health conditions because of more severe infection, he said.
He added that 1,084,857 coronavirus diagnostic tests have been carried out in Iran so far.
More than 7 million people have been infected with COVID-19 globally, and the death toll has exceeded 402,000.
