Iran Assembly of Experts: Strong Guarantees Needed to Honor JCPOA

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Assembly of Experts, a top body electing leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, underscored that any decision to keep Tehran in the 2015 nuclear deal after the US withdrawal from the multilateral agreement must be conditional on firm guarantees from the other parties.

In a statement on Sunday, the 88-member Assembly of Experts denounced the US administration’s move to walk away from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

It also made it clear that in order for Iran to remain in the deal, “serious and strong guarantees” should be provided at soon as possible to “prevent the enemies from wasting time.”

The assembly further pointed to the dark record of the European parties of the JCPOA in acting against the Islamic Republic’s interests, saying the apparent disagreement between the US and Europe is indeed “sharing the work”.

If Iran is not given the necessary guarantees, the country’s diplomatic administration will be “religiously and legally” bound to exit from the nuclear deal, the statement added.

The assembly members further called on the Parliament to take the necessary measures on the US breach of the nuclear deal, and urged the administration to lodge complaints against the US government in the international legal circles for the damages it has inflicted on Iran over the past years.

In a speech from the White House on May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled his country out of the nuclear deal, which was achieved in Vienna in 2015 after around two years of negotiations.

In a speech on May 9, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei urged that any decision to keep the deal running without the US should be conditional on “practical guarantees” from the three European parties to the JCPOA.
