US Experts Call on Trump to Preserve Iran Deal
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Seventy-six American national security experts have urged President-elect Donald Trump to reconsider his campaign vows to undo the nuclear agreement signed between Tehran and world powers last year.
A report signed by the experts, including former officials from both major political parties, argued that the nuclear agreement had reduced the threat of war in the Middle East.
The report stated, “The deal proved that diplomacy with Iran can bear fruit…,” The New York Times reported recently.
It urged the incoming Trump administration to use the nuclear agreement as the basis for cooperation on other issues, including a desire by Iran and the United States to eliminate the Daeh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group, which has convulsed the Middle East and carried out attacks in the West.
The report was produced by the National Iranian American Council, a Washington-based group that has advocated improved relations with Iran.
Iran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany), reached the comprehensive nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in July 2015 and implemented it in January 2016.
In a speech to the pro-Israeli lobby group AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) in March, Trump declared that his "number-one priority” would be to "dismantle the disastrous deal with Iran."
After Trump's winning the election, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that Iran expects the new US administration respect the nuclear deal.
