The ceremony was attended by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev, who arrived in Tehran earlier in the day on an official visit.
Cabinet ministers and senior officials from the two neighboring countries signed the agreements.
The MoUs entail cooperation on the prevention, restriction, and reduction of consequences in emergency situations; cooperation on mutual administrative assistance in customs affairs; cooperation on veterinary and livestock health; an agreement framework for power sale; an agreement framework for connecting the railroads of Iran and Azerbaijan; and an agreement on construction of a railroad bridge connecting the Iranian city of Astara to its namesake in Azerbaijan.
An agreement for cooperation was also signed between Iran’s vice-president for women and family affairs and Azerbaijan’s public commission for women, children, and family affairs.
An MoU on health and medical sciences between Iranian and Azeri health ministries, an MoU between the two countries’ labor ministries on labor, employment, and social support, an MoU between Iranian and Azeri national oil companies on oil and gas projects, and an MoU between Iran’s Ghadir investment company and Azerbaijan’s public oil company on oil, gas, and medical products were the other documents inked by the two countries’ cabinet members.
Before the ceremony, President Rouhani and Aliyev discussed the expansion of economic ties between Tehran and Baku in a meeting.
This is Aliyev’s second visit to Iran during President Rouhani’s tenure. The first was in spring 2014.
Iran and Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge closer partnership in various fields, from fighting against terrorism to the exchange of electricity or gas deals.
Meanwhile, a lasting nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers that terminated sanctions on Iran has also paved the way for Tehran-Baku interaction to thrive.
Known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear accord came into force on January 16.
