Azeri President in Iran for Talks

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – The Republic of Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev arrived in Tehran on Tuesday morning for an official visit that is expected to result in a dozen of agreements cementing ties between the two Muslim neighbors.

Politics

In his second visit to Iran during President Hassan Rouhani’s tenure, the long-running Azeri president is reportedly going to sign 11 cooperation agreements with Iran in various political and economic fields.

Aliyev had already visited Iran in spring 2014, when he held a meeting with Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.

Iran and its northwestern neighbor Azerbaijan have accelerated efforts in recent years to forge a closer partnership in various fields, from the fight against terrorism to the exchange of electricity or gas deals.

Meanwhile, a lasting nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers has also terminated sanctions on Iran, paving the way for Tehran-Baku interaction to thrive.

Known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the nuclear accord came into force on January 16.
