Arak Reactor Document, Legally Binding: Iran’s Nuclear Chief
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – An official document on redesigning Iran’s heavy-water reactor in Arak is a firm, legally binding compact, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) asserted.
“The document on redesigning the Arak (reactor) is very rigid in legal terms, because the six (foreign) ministers of the Group 5+1 members, the European Union representative as well as our country’s foreign minister have signed it,” Ali Akbar Salehi said in a televised interview on Thursday night.
He said the pact “is one of the most credible international documents,” because it has been signed by the governments, not by the companies.
His comments came after an official document on the heavy-water reactor was endorsed by the whole parties to a final agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program.
Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France, and Germany - also known as P5+1 or E3+3) on July 14 reached a conclusion over the text of a comprehensive 159-page deal on Tehran’s nuclear energy program.
According to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran’s Arak heavy-water reactor is to be reconfigured.
The JCPOA stipulates that “Iran will redesign and rebuild a modernised heavy water research reactor in Arak, based on an agreed conceptual design, using fuel enriched up to 3.67 %, in a form of an international partnership which will certify the final design.”
