The service, which runs between Iran and Turkey, was hit by a blast from a remotely detonated landmine just after midnight, in an attack blamed on Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants, a local gendarme official said on condition of anonymity.

The driver was slightly injured as the train approached Kecikayasi, a village in Turkey’s Van province close to the Iranian border.

Passengers, including Iranian tourists, continued their journey to Van, by bus, News.AZ website reported.

Hours earlier, the Trans-Asian rail service from Ankara to Tehran was targeted in a similar mine attack. There were no casualties and the train was able to continue.

Also on Thursday, a German-made land mine was discovered aboard another train in eastern Turkey.
