Iran to Support Lebanon’s Decision on New President: Envoy
TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iran’s Ambassador to Lebanon Ghazanfar Roknabadi said Tehran strongly supports any decision by Lebanese political parties on the country’s new president.
“Any decision made based on a consensus among the Lebanese sides to elect new president, will be welcomed and supported by Iran,” Roknabadi said during a meeting with French Ambassador to Lebanon Patrice Paoli in the capital city of Beirut on Friday.
Roknabadi also touched upon the positive developments in the region and Iran’s positive interactions with all Lebanese parties and tribes, and expressed the hope that security and stability in Lebanon and Syria would be restored in the near future.
The French envoy, for his part, expressed the hope that the Lebanese political parties would manage to elect the president within the scheduled timeframe.
He also called on Lebanese factions to seize the opportunity to reach an agreement based on peaceful coexistence.
Lebanese parliamentarians failed to elect a new president in a first round of voting on Wednesday, with 124 lawmakers attending the session out of 128. Speaker set the second Parliamentary round for next Wednesday, on April 30.
Parliament must choose a successor to President Michel Sleiman, whose six-year term ends in late May. If parliament fails to elect a new president in the second session, politicians might look for consensus candidates.
