Addressing a meeting of Caspian Sea naval commanders in Russia’s St. Petersburg on Tuesday, Rear Admiral Irani said the Caspian Sea is the shared domain of Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, and the Republic of Azerbaijan, and that all matters concerning the sea will be resolved solely by these five coastal countries.
“Decisions regarding the Caspian Sea will be made only by its littoral states,” he said, emphasizing the principle of regional ownership and self-determination.
He made it clear that there is no place for extra-regional powers in the Caspian Sea, and the coastal nations will not allow foreign actors to assert influence or presence in the area.
“The capabilities of the Caspian littoral states are sufficient to ensure the region’s lasting security, foster economic vitality, and address environmental challenges,” the Iranian Navy chief added.
Expressing satisfaction with the successful joint naval drill recently held at Iran’s Bandar Anzali and along the southern coasts of the Caspian Sea, Rear Admiral Irani announced that a new joint exercise will soon be conducted in coordination with other Caspian states.
The commanders of the Caspian littoral navies have convened in St. Petersburg to further strengthen cooperation, enhance regional security, promote economic interaction, and coordinate on environmental and maritime issues affecting the world’s largest enclosed body of water.
