European Troika Threaten Iran With UN Sanctions Despite JCPOA Non-Compliance
TEHRAN (Tasnim) - In a coordinated move with the United States and the Israeli regime, European foreign ministers issued threats against Iran over the nuclear issue, despite years of failing to uphold their own commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
Foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the Britain, alongside the European Union’s foreign policy chief, held a phone call with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
According to Reuters, the European troika called for an immediate resumption of nuclear negotiations.
They warned that unless what they termed “tangible progress” was achieved, they would move to reinstate United Nations Security Council sanctions against Iran.
Reuters did not elaborate on the precise meaning of “tangible progress.”
“The foreign ministers urged Iran to immediately return to a diplomatic process to reach a verifiable and lasting nuclear agreement," a French diplomatic source told Reuters.
These threats come as European parties continue to violate their own obligations under the JCPOA, while simultaneously echoing the rhetoric of Washington and Tel Aviv.
In recent years, European states have quietly supported the US “maximum pressure” campaign, aligning with policies designed to isolate and weaken Iran.
Despite their ongoing failure to uphold the nuclear agreement, the Europeans now present demands to Iran without offering any guarantees of compliance on their part.
According to UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the trigger mechanism can only be activated by states that remain participants in the JCPOA.
Given their repeated breaches, European countries have effectively removed themselves from the accord. Nevertheless, they are now pressuring Iran to engage in a one-sided process that yields no benefit to the Iranian people.
Officials in the Islamic Republic have reiterated that Iran will not retreat from its peaceful nuclear program, including uranium enrichment.
Tehran has made it clear that any negotiations must be based on mutual respect and conducted without preconditions.
Iran has also stressed that it will never negotiate under duress or pressure, emphasizing that coercive policies have consistently failed to produce desired outcomes for Western parties.
