Ayatollah Khamenei Attends Mourning Ceremony in Tehran

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei attended a mourning ceremony in Tehran on Saturday night on the eve of Ashura, which marks the anniversary of martyrdom of the third Imam of Shiite Muslims, Hussein ibn Ali (AS).

Ayatollah Khamenei attended the Muharram mourning ceremonies for Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his faithful companions on Saturday, July 5, at the Imam Khomeini Hussainiyah of Tehran.

The mourning ceremony was also attended by senior Iranian officials and people of different walks of life.

The third Shiite Imam, along with 72 of his companions, was martyred in a battle against the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid ibn Muawiyah, in the Iraqi region of Karbala, after he refused to pledge allegiance to the ruling tyrant.

For Muslims, Ashura has become a symbol of eternal stance of truth against falsehood, and lies at the heart of all struggles against oppression and tyranny.
