Georgia’s People, New Government Lack Desire to Become West’s Pawn: Lavrov

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Georgian people and the country’s new authorities realize everything and are building sovereign policy in order to avoid becoming the West’s pawn and move forward, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.

"The US and EU are trying to make Tbilisi face a false dilemma: with us or against us. Meanwhile, it seems that Georgia’s authorities want to shape their sovereign policy corresponding to national interests without becoming a pawn of Western countries which are pushing Georgia toward destabilization, economic problems and exacerbation of relations with Russia. I have no doubt that the Georgian people understand everything and will move forward," the top Russian diplomat said in an interview with TASS.

He noted that over many years, Washington and its allies have been using "color revolutions" as a tool to contain their geopolitical rivals and get rid of those unwanted. "The examples of Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Ukraine confirm this," Lavrov added.

He explained that events in Georgia are a consequence of applying double standards, "when, under the guise of false concern about democracy and human rights, everything is being done to recall the results of the elections, certified as free, even by the structure with tarnished reputation, such as the OSCE ODHIR." "Why the need to recall them? Simply because the people’s choice did not please puppeteers from Washington and Brussels," the Russian foreign minister stressed.
